Pidurangala Temple: A Sacred and Scenic Gem in Sri Lanka
Pidurangala Temple, located near Sigiriya in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, is an ancient Buddhist monastery with deep historical and spiritual significance. Nestled at the base of Pidurangala Rock, the temple is believed to have been established over 1,500 years ago, during the reign of King Kashyapa (473–495 AD).
According to local history, when King Kashyapa chose nearby Sigiriya Rock to build his fortress-palace, he relocated the monks who were living there to Pidurangala. In gratitude, he expanded and renovated Pidurangala Temple, transforming it into an important monastic complex.
The temple complex features:
- A white stupa (dagoba)
- A rock cave temple with ancient Buddhist murals and statues
- A massive reclining Buddha statue carved from brick and plaster, considered one of the largest of its kind
The climb to Pidurangala Rock starts through the temple grounds, requiring visitors to pass sacred shrines and ruins. After a moderate hike, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and a breathtaking direct view of Sigiriya Rock — often considered one of the best viewpoints in Sri Lanka.
Today, Pidurangala Temple is both a serene place of worship and a popular destination for travelers seeking spirituality, history, and stunning natural beauty.
